Detroit area hospitals employ more than 109,000 people, making health care one of region's largest employers. When you add in all the other health care services, more than 250,000 are employed.

Nine regional Detroit hospitals earned the “Best Hospitals” nod in 2009-2010 by U.S. News and World Report. Several area hospitals earned top ranks in several categories

According the Michigan Health & Hospitals Association, more than $280 million dollars was invested by nonprofit hospitals to medical education and research in 2008. Michigan continues to operates its hospital efficiently with hospital costs ranking 5.5% below the national average in 2007.
