DETROIT, November 16, 2011 – Today, the Detroit Regional Chamber announced Foreign Affairs Columnist of The New York Times and best-selling author, Thomas L. Friedman will be a keynote speaker at the 2012 Mackinac Policy Conference, held Tuesday, May 29 through Friday, June 1. The 2012 Mackinac Policy Conference vision is to create a globally competitive, financially attractive business environment in Michigan to increase economic development through collaboration, visionary ideas and partnerships with business, government and philanthropy. “This year’s Conference is primed to build off last year’s momentum,” said Chief Executive Officer of Henry Ford Health System Nancy Schlichting, who is also serving as the chair of the 2012 Mackinac Policy Conference. ”To continue this, once again the Conference will feature a lineup of innovative decision-makers, national experts and influential business thinkers, like Friedman who will fuel statewide dialogue about building a better Michigan.” Friedman’s recently published New York Times best seller, That Used to Be US: How America Fell Behind in the World It Invented and How We Can Come Back, will be a basis for discussion about the impact of the global economy on America and Michigan’s future. “Friedman is a national leader in creating dialogue about the changing economic opportunities for our nation,” said Sandy K. Baruah, president and chief executive officer of the Detroit Regional Chamber. “Michigan has the opportunity to right itself and Friedman will discuss how Michigan must adapt to the 21st Century global market through innovation and collaboration to be successful.” Registration for the 2012 Conference opens online today and sponsorship opportunities are available. This year’s Conference will continue to work with an Advisory Committee to set the strategic direction for the Conference, and provide high-level guidance on the vision and agenda of the Conference.
